How can we help you?

All the answers about the app, Safe Places and privacy.

Just tap “start a journey” on the map on the home screen. Then choose the trusted contacts you want to share your journey with — they’ll be able to follow you in real time. You can start a journey with a destination address (to get home) or without one (for a run, for example).

Yes. If you don’t enter a destination address, you simply share your location with your trusted contacts. You can stop sharing at any time.

You need to have downloaded the app and added your friend(s) as trusted contacts. You’ll get a notification each time a friend shares their journey with you, and you can watch them progress on the map.

You stop sharing your location, and your trusted contacts are notified that you’ve ended your journey.

Your trusted contacts receive a clear notification warning them that you’re in danger. They instantly see where you are so they can come and help, along with your location and battery level.

After 5 minutes, your trusted contacts are notified that you’ve stopped moving and that something may be wrong.

They’re people you choose from your friends, family and loved ones — people you trust to look out for you. They need to download the app to follow your journeys and receive your alerts. You choose who follows you on each journey.

Every user picks a username. To add a trusted contact, invite them to download the app (the “send an invitation” button at the top right of the home screen): they’ll receive a link and your username. If they already use the app, add their username. For safety, you must both accept each other.

An unknown username has asked to add you as a trusted contact? Check with your friends and family whether one of them invited you. If you don’t know who it is, decline the request.

On the trusted contacts page (top right of the home screen), you can add or remove people. Each time you start a journey, you select or deselect who to share it with.

You can report different situations: feeling unsafe, harassment, physical assault, sexual assault or domestic violence. Assault and harassment reports are shown to other users for 30 minutes, always anonymously.

They alert other users so they can avoid an area, produce anonymous statistics on safety, and let us work with partner cities on concrete action. After every report, we suggest next steps (calling the police, filing a complaint, contacting a charity).

They’re shown for 30 minutes, then stored anonymously to build statistics and take action with public authorities.

Just tap the blue button on the map and select what you want to report. Feel free to leave a comment explaining what happened.

The app doesn’t replace emergency numbers: call 17 (or 112) if you need to. In some partner cities, data is shared in real time with the police, but this doesn’t guarantee they will intervene.

Always. Your report can never be linked to your identity — we never ask who you are, only for a username.

A Safeplace is a carefully selected partner business (bar, restaurant, tobacconist, pharmacy, shop…). Its staff are trained and aware of how to give a caring welcome to users who need to get to safety. They’re committed citizens, not police officers or healthcare professionals.

Simply show the app or say that UMAY sent you. Briefly explain the situation if you want to: you’re safe now.

Do you run a business? Contact us through the contact form on the website and we’ll get back to you quickly. Listing isn’t automatic: we’ll check with you that your venue meets our criteria.

In your profile menu (tap your photo), the “Recommend a Safeplace” feature lets you suggest a business.

Absolutely not. You’re always in control of when and with whom you share your location. With no journey in progress (or no trusted contact selected), nobody can see where you are. When you end a journey, sharing stops automatically.

The app is anonymous: we never know who you are. Any data you share is completely anonymous.

Not at all. We can never know where you are or retrace your journeys. Only your trusted contacts see your location while you’re sharing it — and no history is kept.

For your safety. The less we know about you, the less risk there is of your data getting out. We don’t want the app to be misused to identify or locate our users.

It’s recommended but not required. Your email lets you receive a code to reinstall the app and recover your data (trusted contacts, levels).

No. The data (age, gender, sexual orientation, going-out habits…) is used for more detailed statistics, never to identify you. You always stay anonymous.

To permanently delete your account, send us a request via the contact form on the website.

It lets you record audio so you have initial evidence in case of assault or harassment. It works with your phone’s voice recorder app, and the files are saved only on your phone.

You need to turn on your phone’s GPS and allow the app to access your location. If not, fix this in your phone’s settings (or reinstall the app).

You need to allow the app to send notifications. If this is blocked, you won’t be able to look out for your contacts properly. We promise we don’t overdo the notifications.
